Rafael Grossi: Returning inspectors to Iran is priority number one for IAEA - 1

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi said on Wednesday that his top priority is restoring access to the agency's inspectors to Iran's nuclear facilities. The aim is to assess the impact of the US and Israeli military strikes and to check enriched uranium stocks, Reuters reports, Fokus reports.

“This is priority number one“, Grossi stressed at a press conference during a meeting of the Austrian security cabinet. He said the IAEA was demanding access to all sites, including the three plants where Iran was enriching uranium before the Israeli strikes on June 13.

When asked if Iran had provided information on the current status of its stockpile of enriched uranium - especially that with a purity of up to 60%, approaching weapons-grade - Grossi pointed to a letter received from Tehran the same day saying the country would take "special measures" to protect its nuclear materials and equipment.

"No details were given on what these measures entail, but it is clear that they are increased security measures. We can assume that the material is still there," Grossi said, suggesting that the bulk of Iran's nuclear stockpile was likely intact after the attacks.
