Israel strikes northern Lebanon, main target was Hamas fighter - 1

The Israeli army said today that it had struck an activist of the Palestinian movement "Hamas" in the area of the city of Tripoli in northern Lebanon, Agence France-Presse reported, BTA reported.

At least two people were killed in the attack, according to Lebanese security and health sources quoted by DPA.

Three people were injured in the strike on a car.

Lebanese security forces confirmed that the main target of the attack was a "Hamas" fighter. His identity was not reported, but "Hamas" has strong ties to the pro-Iranian movement "Hezbollah" in Lebanon.

"The Israeli army recently struck a leading Hamas terrorist in the Tripoli area of Lebanon," the Israeli army statement said, without providing further details.

This is the first Israeli strike in northern Lebanon since the ceasefire came into effect on November 27, 2024. of the ceasefire that ended the war between Israel and "Hezbollah", AFP notes.

Despite the ceasefire, which ended nearly a year of hostilities, including two months of open warfare that greatly weakened the pro-Iranian movement, Israel regularly strikes Lebanon, but mainly in the south of the country, Agence France-Presse points out.

The Israeli army claims that its bombing is directed against "Hezbollah", and accuses the Lebanese authorities of not doing enough to disarm the movement.

According to the ceasefire agreement, "Hezbollah" was to withdraw its fighters north of the Litani River, about 30 kilometers from the border with Israel, and only the Lebanese army and UN peacekeepers were to be stationed in the area.

Israel, for its part, was to completely withdraw its troops from Lebanon, but they still remain in five positions in the south of the country that the Israeli army considers strategic.
