Finland has notified the United Nations of its withdrawal from the Ottawa Convention on the Prohibition of Anti-Personnel Mines, the country's foreign ministry said late last night, quoted by Reuters, BTA reports.
According to the statement, the withdrawal will take effect six months after the notification is submitted in January 2026.
Reuters recalls that Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Poland have also announced their intentions to withdraw from the treaty. They argue their decision with the growing military threat from Russia.
Earlier this month it became clear that Lithuania and Finland are preparing to start producing anti-personnel mines as early as next year.
