US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. will visit the United States “in a few days”. The news was reported by the Finnish news agency FNA, BTA reports.
The statement was made on the sidelines of the Foreign Ministers' Meeting within the framework of the ASEAN Regional Forum and the US-Philippines-Japan Trilateral Ministerial Meeting, held yesterday in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
“We have excellent relations with Japan and the Philippines. We work closely together on issues such as the economic corridor, maritime security and territorial integrity. "We look forward to President Marcos' visit to Washington in a few days," Rubio said.
No specific details have been announced at this time regarding the date or agenda of the visit.
"We can confirm that the visit will also take place in Washington soon, but no dates have been officially announced yet," said Glenda Wallace, acting spokesperson for the U.S. Embassy in the Philippines, in a text message.
Ferdinand Marcos Jr. previously visited Washington in April 2024, when he participated in the first-ever U.S.-Philippines-Japan trilateral summit.
The historic meeting aimed to strengthen economic and maritime cooperation between the three countries. One of the main outcomes was the launch of the Luzon Economic Corridor, a flagship initiative aimed at developing key industrial and commercial zones on the island of Luzon.
