Russia summoned the Polish ambassador to the country on Monday and informed him it would close the Polish consulate in its exclave of Kaliningrad on August 29 in response to the closure of the Russian consulate in the Polish city of Krakow, Reuters reported, citing the Foreign Ministry in Moscow.
In May, Poland said it was closing the Russian consulate in Krakow, accusing Moscow of being responsible for a fire that almost completely destroyed a shopping mall in the capital Warsaw in 2024. Russia has denied any involvement in the arson.
Poland said it would respond "adequately" of the closure of the consulate in Kaliningrad, Foreign Ministry spokesman Pawel Wronski said today.
"The Polish Foreign Ministry will respond adequately to Russia's actions," Wronski said at a briefing broadcast on "TVP Info" television. The diplomat did not specify what retaliatory actions Warsaw would take. He also called on Polish citizens not to undertake tourist trips to Russia, TASS notes.
In addition, Wronski said that according to a note from the Russian Foreign Ministry, one Polish diplomat is obliged to leave Russia in connection with the closure of the Consulate General in Kaliningrad.
