US President Donald Trump made it clear that there must be an agreement by August 8 to end Russia's war in Ukraine, the US told the UN Security Council, quoted by Reuters, BTA reported.
"Russia and Ukraine must agree to a ceasefire and lasting peace. It is time for an agreement. President Trump has made it clear that this must be done by August 8. The United States is ready to take additional measures to ensure peace," John Kelly, a senior US diplomat, told the 15-member council.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy earlier today called on the world to act for regime change in Russia and to seize Russian assets rather than just freeze them, AFP reported.
The Ukrainian leader made the appeal in a video conference with participants in a conference marking the 50th anniversary of the Helsinki Final Act - a historic agreement signed between the Eastern and Western blocs in 1975 and guaranteeing the inviolability of borders - a principle that the Russian invasion of Ukraine has trampled on, AFP recalled.
"I believe that Russia can be pushed to end this war. "It started it and may be forced to end it," Zelensky said a few hours after another midnight Russian attack on Ukraine, in which 6 people were killed and over 50 were injured.
"But if the world does not aim for regime change in Russia, this means that even after the end of the war, Moscow will continue to try to destabilize neighboring countries," Zelensky stressed.
The Ukrainian president also advocated confiscating Russian assets.
