US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said today that he hopes to announce later in the day whether possible sanctions against Russia will come into effect this week, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.
He said that he had spoken with Washington's special envoy Steve Witkoff, who is already on his way back from Moscow, and that there will be more discussions on the topic by the end of the day.
"We have more to talk about later in the day", the secretary of state said, when asked to comment on whether sanctions will be imposed on Russia this week. Rubio added that he hopes statements will be made soon on the issue, which he said "maybe (will be) positive, maybe not."
Russia announced earlier today that Witkoff had a "useful and constructive" meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, two days before an ultimatum issued by Trump to Moscow to agree to a peace deal with Ukraine or face new sanctions expires.
