The US has offered Ukraine security guarantees, which are analogous to Article 5 of the NATO treaty, the Ukrainian UNIAN agency reported hours after the meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

As UNIAN reports, citing its own sources, US President Donald Trump raised this issue at a meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Anchorage. Putin approved the idea.

These guarantees could be obligations similar to “Article 5 of the NATO Treaty“ (an attack on one NATO country is considered an attack on all), but this guarantee will not be provided directly by NATO. A guarantee similar in content to Article 5, but without the participation of the Alliance, was allegedly “agreed with Putin“.

A European representative said that if a peace agreement is reached, the US and the Europeans will support “Article 5“ security guarantees, but without the participation of NATO.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is further coordinating Ukraine's positions with European partners after his conversation with US President Donald Trump, Ukrinform reported, citing a statement by the Ukrainian leader on "Telegram", BTA reported.

"Today, after a conversation with President Trump, we further coordinated positions with European leaders. The positions are clear. A real peace must be achieved that will be long-lasting, and not turn into another pause between Russian invasions. The killings must stop as soon as possible, the fire must cease both on the battlefield and in the sky and against our port infrastructure. All Ukrainian prisoners of war and captured civilians must be released, and the children abducted by Russia must be returned. Thousands of our people are still being held captive, they must all return home. Pressure must be maintained on Russia while the aggression and occupation continue," Zelensky wrote after his conversation with EU leaders.

The Ukrainian president added that in his conversation with Trump he had emphasized the strengthening of sanctions against Russia if a trilateral meeting does not take place or if Russia deviates from ending the war. "Sanctions are an effective tool. Security must be guaranteed reliably and in the long term with the participation of both Europe and the United States. "All issues that are important for Ukraine should be discussed only with the participation of Ukraine, and no issue, especially territorial issues, should be resolved without Ukraine," Zelensky stressed. He also thanked partners for their assistance.

Zelensky said he would meet with US President Donald Trump on Monday in Washington, Ukrainian media and world agencies reported. The meeting between the two will follow Trump's summit with Putin in Alaska. Earlier today, Trump called Zelensky by phone to tell him what he had spoken to Putin.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Monday that strong security guarantees for Ukraine and Europe were essential for any peace deal to end the war, Reuters reported, citing a post by the EC head on the social platform "Ex", BTA reported.

"The EU is working closely with Zelensky and the United States to achieve a just and lasting peace. Strong security guarantees that will protect the vital interests of Ukraine and Europe are essential," von der Leyen wrote.
