European Commission Vice-President Kaia Kalas stated that the cession of Ukrainian territories is "a trap that Russia has set for us".
"All the talk is about what Ukraine must give up, what concessions Ukraine is ready to make. Meanwhile, we forget that Russia has not made a single concession," Kallas said in an interview with the BBC.
"This is exactly the trap that Russia has set for us", she stressed.
"If we fall into this trap, if we put pressure on Ukraine to make concessions, then this situation will repeat itself, because aggression will be rewarded,", concluded Kallas.
According to Kallas, Russian President Vladimir Putin "got everything he wanted" from the summit in Alaska: he was received with honors, and the White House did not impose new sanctions.
Kallas also commented on the negotiations on security guarantees for Ukraine. According to her, there are few "clear steps" at this stage.
"The most reliable guarantee of security is a strong Ukrainian army," she said.
Following talks in Washington involving Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders, several countries are preparing a proposal on what security guarantees for Kiev could look like.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has already said that the deployment of Western troops in Ukraine is unacceptable for Russia.
