A 23-year-old Ukrainian woman who fled the war in Ukraine to the US to seek safety was stabbed to death by a homeless criminal with an extensive criminal history, the New York Post reported.

Young Ukrainian refugee Irina Zarutska was stabbed at a train station in the state of North Carolina, according to family members and authorities. She suffered multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Zarutzka “recently arrived in the United States, seeking safety from war and hoping for a new beginning,” according to her GoFundMe page, which was set up to raise money to help the young woman’s aunt and other family members.

“Tragically, her life was cut short too soon… This is an irreparable loss for her family,” the statement said.

A black man has been arrested in the killing. 34-year-old DeCarlos Brown Jr. has been identified as the suspect and charged with first-degree murder. He was homeless. He has been arrested multiple times since 2011 for various crimes.

The police have not released any information about the motive for the deadly attack. The investigation into the incident is ongoing. According to initial information, the killer and the victim did not know each other.
