The number of victims of the incident in which a funicular derailed yesterday in Lisbon has reached 17 people, the emergency services announced today, quoted by the Associated Press, BTA reported.
Two of the victims died in hospital last night, the head of the Lisbon Civil Protection Service, Marjarida Castro Martins, told journalists. This brings the number of injured to 21.
Martins did not specify the names or nationalities of the deceased, saying that their families would be informed first.
Among the 21 injured in yesterday's incident, there were many foreigners who were on the funicular, which is popular with tourists, Martins added.
Rescue services said that at least 11 foreigners were among the injured, Agence France-Presse reported. Among them are two Germans, two Spaniards, and one person each from France, Italy, Switzerland, Canada, Morocco, South Korea and Cape Verde, the Associated Press added.
