Ninova is furious: Private hydroelectric plants are making profits, and 200,000 Bulgarians are without water at 40 degrees

Our experts told us that at this moment a concrete solution could be to stop the private hydroelectric plants that are currently drawing water from the dams

We submitted a request to hear four ministers: of regional development, of agriculture, of energy and of the environment and water. The question is extremely important. On Friday, about 100,000 Bulgarians were without water. To date, the information is that there are already over 200,000. 297 settlements, 24 districts in the country are affected by this problem. This is an inhuman ordeal - at 40 degrees these people live without water, including drinking water. We urgently need some solution!

This is what former BSP leader Cornelia Ninova told journalists in parliament.

She realizes that the water problem is multi-layered, but stressed - it is absolutely imperative that measures be taken now to ensure people a normal way of life.

"We previously received support from several parliamentary groups (note ed. GERB and Peevski's DPS) to hold this hearing today, and to make concrete decisions.

Our experts have told us that at this point a concrete solution could be to stop the private hydropower plants that are currently drawing water from the dams. In addition to being inhumane to leave people in this situation, it is also super unfair that a hundred people in the country are currently accumulating millions on the back of the disaster of 200,000 Bulgarians.

There are over 200 hydropower plants in Bulgaria - on rivers and on dams, respectively. They are currently working, especially the private ones are accumulating profits, and these people are without water", Ninova pointed out.

She also noted the importance, at the same time, of maintaining the security of the energy system. "Not to turn off so much power as to prevent the normal functioning of the energy industry," Ninova specified.
