Toyota breaks station wagon stereotypes - 1

The Japanese company Toyota is preparing to introduce a new generation of the Corolla model, the official debut of which is expected in 2026. According to preliminary data, this update will cover three body types at once: sedan, hatchback and station wagon, but the most interesting is the universal version called Corolla Touring, which, according to the authoritative Japanese publication BestCarWeb, will receive three modifications with different concepts at once - from a practical everyday car to a crossover and even a sports version with a hint of racing equipment.

The developers of the new Corolla have paid special attention to aspects such as everyday usability, increased economy and reduced environmental impact. According to the source, the hybrid power unit of the base models is based on a new 1.5-liter in-line four-cylinder gasoline engine that works in tandem with an electric motor. Buyers will be able to choose between a self-charging hybrid (HEV) and a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). These solutions are aimed at improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions, which meets the modern environmental requirements of global markets.

One of the most unusual innovations for Corolla will be the appearance of a crossover based on the station wagon. Such a version will receive increased ground clearance, protective trim made of unpainted plastic around the perimeter of the body and a generally more “utilitarian” look. In fact, it will be aimed at those who are looking for something similar to the Subaru Crosstrek, which also combines versatility with off-road qualities. This approach will allow Corolla to enter a segment that is actively developing - compact crossovers based on passenger models, which in recent years have been in great demand all over the world, including in the markets of Europe and North America.

However, the most unexpected and impressive option will be the so-called sports version of the Corolla Touring, which is essentially a “sharpened” station wagon aimed at lovers of dynamic driving. According to preliminary information, this model will be based on the 1.6-liter three-cylinder turbo engine G16E-GTS, already known from the GR Yaris and GR Corolla hatchbacks. Its power will reach 304 hp, and in combination with all-wheel drive, this will turn the car into a high-performance station wagon with a pronounced sporty character, capable not only of providing comfort in everyday operation, but also of giving pleasure from dynamic driving.

This approach demonstrates Toyota's desire to break the stereotypes of station wagons as exclusively family or utilitarian vehicles, offering something truly exciting for driving enthusiasts.
