Traditionally, every year our country joins the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, which this year is celebrated on November 16. This was announced on its website by the National Center for Public Health and Analysis.
The consequences of serious road traffic accidents worldwide are immeasurable when they relate to human life. With each such loss, destinies change, the consequences are irreparable not only for the relatives of the victims, but also for the entire society. Of all causes of mortality worldwide, road traffic accidents remain the leading cause of premature death among children and young people, and this trend is persistent and worrying, according to the National Center for Public Health and Analysis.
In just one year (2024), 478 people died and 9,054 were injured in 7,173 serious accidents on the country's roads. This is an occasion to once again realize how responsible we are as road users, what our culture of behavior is and what our skills are for responding to critical situations on the road, as well as to accept that efforts to protect human health and life from road accidents are the responsibility of every member of our society, institutions, and family, the announcement states.
The day is celebrated on the third Sunday of November with a resolution of the UN General Assembly of October 26, 2005. The campaign for the day in 2025 is called: “REMEMBER. SUPPORT. ACT.“
According to information from the Ministry of Interior, since the beginning of November there have been 237 accidents with 21 deaths and 299 injuries. Since the beginning of the year, there have been 5,869 road accidents, 394 deaths, and 7,310 injuries.
A 2024 road safety report shows that despite the strategic efforts undertaken and partially positive trends reported, road traffic injuries in the country remain at an unacceptably high level, the State Agency for Road Safety announced on its website on August 1 this year.
The weak implementation of measures and the insufficient commitment of institutions to prevention are the main reasons for this.
Car traffic continues to grow - 14.4% increase in mileage compared to 2019, which increases the pressure on the road system and the risk of accidents. Although the number of deaths has decreased by 9% compared to 2023 and by 23.9% compared to 2019, there has been an increase in serious accidents with victims and seriously injured people - a trend that places additional emphasis on the need for systematic prevention, the announcement states.
