Slavi Trifonov: We supported the euro referendum so that the people can determine their own destiny - 1

The leader of "There is such a people" (ITN) Slavi Trifonov clarified the position of his parliamentary group regarding yesterday's vote in the National Assembly to hold a referendum on the euro. Although he personally supports the adoption of the single European currency, Trifonov insists that Bulgarian citizens should have the last word.

In his post on the social network Facebook, he commented on the vote that took place yesterday (December 3), in which the majority in parliament rejected President Rumen Radev's proposal for a referendum on the people.

Trifonov stressed that the media often miss important nuances and that is why he wants to clarify the facts. He confirmed that the ITN deputies voted "for" the proposal, procedurally submitted by "Vazrazhdane", but initiated by the head of state.

"Since a large part of the media is probably conveniently keeping quiet about one fact, I will pay attention to it. Yesterday in Parliament, the parliamentary group of "Vazrazhdane" submitted for a vote President Rumen Radev's proposal to hold a referendum with the question: "Do you agree that Bulgaria should introduce the European currency "euro" in 2026?", Trifonov wrote.

The leader of the ITN made a clear distinction between his personal support for the eurozone and his principled position on democratic processes.

"Although I firmly believe that the European currency should be introduced in Bulgaria, I firmly believe that Bulgarians should be asked about everything. The Bulgarian people are wise and can determine their own destiny. Such are the rules of direct democracy," Trifonov is categorical.

We recall that yesterday the National Assembly rejected President Rumen Radev's request to hold a national referendum with the question: "Do you agree that Bulgaria should introduce the European currency "euro" in 2026?".

The decision was made with 135 votes "against" (GERB-SDF, PP-DB, "DPS - New Beginning" and BSP) against 81 votes "for". The parliamentary groups of "Vazrazhdane", "There is such a people" (ITN), "Alliance for Rights and Freedoms" (APS), "MECH" and "Velicie".

Thus, our country continues on the path to the eurozone with a target date of January 1, 2026, without conducting an additional consultation with citizens after the parliament finally closes this topic.
