Bulgaria has achieved an economic "miracle" with 113 billion euros of gross domestic product and growth of over 3 percent. With these optimistic data, GERB leader Boyko Borisov boasted to the chairman of the European People's Party Manfred Weber during their meeting in Zagreb.
According to Boyko Borisov, our country already confidently occupies a place in the "top 5" of the EU countries in terms of economic growth. He cited the main driver of this success as the work of the cabinet with Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov, who managed to direct over 63 billion euros in European aid to Bulgarian municipalities and companies.
"I emphasized that during the term of the “Zhelyazkov“ government, Bulgaria completed its integration and finally became part of the Eurozone and Schengen", Boyko Borisov wrote on social networks, conveniently omitting the fact that the path to these goals took a decade. The GERB leader did not fail to note the "record" investments in defense, while at the same time assuring Manfred Weber that Bulgaria guards European borders with enviable responsibility.
The two leaders have united around the need for stricter measures against illegal migration and hybrid threats. Boyko Borissov strongly supported the EPP's ambition to build common European defense capabilities by 2030, stating that Europe must reduce bureaucracy and focus on innovation.
While rosy economic horizons are being drawn in Zagreb, in Sofia the political reality remains far more prosaic, and statistical growth is still finding its way into the pockets of ordinary Bulgarians.
