I just learned that Krum Zarkov is the new leader of the BSP. For me, this is good news. The Bulgarian left - and Bulgarian politics in general - are in dire need of honest people with progressive thinking. This is what the PP-DB MP Manol Peykov wrote on Facebook.
"In recent years, under the leadership of Ninova and Zafirov, the BSP has become a highly reactionary, traditionalist, patriotic-Orthodox party, moving further and further away from the political idea of the left in general and from the views and principles of traditional Western social democracy in particular," he believes.
"The result? Gradual "fading" of support for the centenary and seizure of the "left" by formations such as "Vazrazhdane" and (to some extent) "Majesty", having much more in common (especially the former!) with German National Socialism than with anything resembling social democracy.
My relatively loose contacts with Krum Zarkov in past parliaments distinguish him in the company of his party colleagues as a decent, educated, thinking and progressive person.
Although I do not feel any sympathy for the BSP in its current incarnation, I am sincerely happy about the election of Mr. Zarkov and wish him success", Peykov also writes.
"I also have a personal story with Mr. Zarkov, which decisively strengthens my personal sympathy for him.
At the very beginning of the short 45th parliament in mid-2021, after the end of a parliamentary session, a man caught up with me on the way out of building.
– Mr. Peykov! What will be the next book in the "Beyond" series?
I turn around, and he immediately notices from my look that I don't recognize him.
– I'm Krum Zarkov. And I'm a huge fan of this series.
Then we chatted for a few minutes about upcoming and past titles in the series. It turned out that he really knows them.
This remains to this day the only conversation I've had about literature with a member of parliament outside our parliamentary group," the member pointed out.
Manol Peykov pleased with Zarkov's election: Honest and progressive man
