Organization of Jews in Bulgaria „Shalom“ with deep indignation followed the holding, albeit in a reduced format, of the event known as the „Lukov March“.
Despite the initial ban of the Sofia Municipality and the stated position of the Ministry of Interior and the State Agency „National Security“ to prevent such a march, the event took place after a court decision to overturn the ban, "Shalom" recalls.
We categorically condemn any manifestation that glorifies personalities and ideologies related to hatred, discrimination and opposition in society. Such events have no place in a modern European state built on the principles of democracy, the rule of law and respect for human dignity.
We express our gratitude to the institutions, public figures and citizens who clearly and consistently uphold democratic values, oppose hate speech and defend historical truth. Their position is an important sign that Bulgarian society possesses sensitivity and maturity on issues that affect the memory and moral foundations of the nation.
Institutional responsibility remains a key factor in guaranteeing public order and for the consistent affirmation of the principles of the rule of law. A sustained public and legislative commitment is needed to prevent such events from taking place in the future.
We expect legislative changes to be initiated and discussed in the next parliament that will clearly and unambiguously limit the possibility of such events taking place on the streets of Sofia.
