Several European liberal parties have sent a letter to the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE), in which they insist on monitoring Delyan Peevski and point out that he has been sanctioned by the US Treasury and Great Britain. The letter was signed by the allied parties from Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Slovakia and the Netherlands.
They emphasize the need not to repeat more cases like the one with the Party of Disaffected Citizens of the former Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis, which switched from the ranks of the liberal group "Renew Europe" in the extreme right "Patriots for Europe".
The General Secretary of the Pan-European Liberal Party, Didrik de Schetzen, told the BNR that he does not rule out the possibility of the DPS being excluded from it because of the serious intra-party discords that have arisen. He described the case as "very serious".
They note that in light of the group's priorities of "Renew Europe" and above all of support for the EU's sanctions regime for human rights abuses, concerns about the Euroliberals' own political family cannot be ignored. It is about the co-chairman of DPS, sanctioned by the USA, and the impact of this fact on the image of the group.
If there is a decision to exclude, it must be taken by the Council of the Alliance, De Schetzen explained to BNR and defined the letter as a "first step". At the same time, he said that this does not imply exclusion from the liberal political group "Renew Europe" in the European Parliament, as there the rules are different.
