The office of the European Prosecutor's Office in Sofia reports that they have confiscated assets during the investigation of a fraud worth 2.6 million euros related to water supply of a municipality in Bulgaria. Civil servants and a mayor suspected of embezzling the EU budget were investigated.
At the request of the European Prosecutor's Office, the Sofia Court of Appeal has imposed a seizure of real estate and vehicles owned by the investigated. These are seven buildings with a total area of nearly 2,000 square meters, as well as three cars.
It is about a project for the reconstruction of the water supply network and the reservoir of a municipality in Bulgaria, financed by the State Fund “Agriculture” under the Program for the Development of Rural Areas of the EU worth 2.6 million euros.
The investigation has revealed data on fraud in the execution of the order awarded to private companies. Civil servants from the "Agriculture" fund are suspected of having entered into unprofitable agreements with the mayor and with these companies to artificially increase the cost of construction works.
