John Malkovich's production “The Guns and the Man“ will be played only for journalists, announced the director of the National Theater “Ivan Vazov” Vasil Vasilev.
„Watch, stream live. Enter, reflect the whole spectacle. See what we have done and then crucify us. But don't crucify us if you see that we are not making an anti-Bulgarian play, but a culture that we in no way harm the dignity of,” said Vassilev, quoted by BTV.
„At the moment you are watching this play, I am asking you for airtime, broadcast it live. We talked to John. We will be refunding people who bought tickets tonight. We want the whole of Bulgaria to watch it. I walked out with love, it's a shame. It's a national theatre. It is a shame that 2024 is the year that someone wants censorship," the director of the National Theater also said.
"I want all the people out there to be held accountable for this desecration they are doing. I came out with my face in front of them to ask what the problem was and they stormed me," Vassilev said.
"This protest, according to the Metropolitan Municipality, is about cultural heritage. This is not a protest against taking down John Malkovich's play. I think this protest is currently illegal. Please, you haven't seen it. Crucify me, I'm ready to resign. But first watch, don't judge us. What is this disinformation, what is this country", he also said.
