Scientists have discovered new vertebrate fossils in the deposit near Tran. One of the most impressive finds is a dinosaur rib.
The discoveries are part of the eighth paleontological expedition in this area, reports Nova TV.
„At first I thought it was a turtle, since the end of the rib is flat and relatively rounded. In the cleaning process, it turned out that the turtle had somehow greatly extended the fragment of its shell – there are none. And when we completely uncovered it and saw its morphology, we understood what it was,“ said Assoc. Prof. Latinka Hristova.
Vladimir Nikolov added that the excitement is enormous because they are discovering a piece of the puzzle of the ancient past not only of our country, but also of the world as a whole.
A total of 30 fossil finds were discovered during the expedition – teeth from two types of crocodiles, turtle shells, scales and teeth from armored pikes.
„Some of the turtle shells found this year bear traces, marks from the biological activity of other animals, there are marks that resemble tooth marks“, said Vladimir Nikolov.
The discoveries introduce us to what the deposit near Tran looked like about 80 million years ago.
„It was formed in a mixed environment, that is, it contains sediments that were brought from both the land and the shallowest parts of some sea basin“, said Assoc. Prof. Docho Dochev.
We recall that another deposit was recently discovered near Tran.
„It is probably older deposit of what we are currently working on“, said Assoc. Prof. Latinka Hristova.
