The Sofia Police have detained a 22-year-old young man who made a full confession that it was he who let tram No. 22 move on the rails, which subsequently derailed. This was announced at a media briefing by the director of the Sofia Police Department, Lyubomir Nikolov.
He explained that the cameras in the area identified two people who were trying to get on the tram car. After they failed to get on, they passed on its left side and through the open window started the tram in motion.
Nikolov indicated that immediately after that, search operations began, as a result of which a 29-year-old man was first detained. After questioning by the police, he admitted that he was one of the faces on the cameras and revealed that his 22-year-old friend was the one who actually activated the tram's drive. He then showed investigators the communication between them in a chat application, which proved his claim.
In the chat, the perpetrator wrote that he regretted the incident and that he did it under the influence of a fairly large amount of alcohol.
Nikolov added that the police then began searching for the 22-year-old young man, visiting 11 addresses where he could be.
In the late hours of yesterday, we identified the person and detained him. He admitted to the crime, his motive was drunkenness, if I may say so. He drank a fairly large amount of alcohol, the head of the Sofia police explained to the media.
From his words, it also became clear that the detained person has a criminal record and is from Sofia.
