The Sofia City Court will sit on September 4 on the appeal measure of a physical education teacher detained for sexually assaulting a girl under the age of 14. The 31-year-old teacher is in custody with the most severe measure of detention.
The Sofia District Prosecutor's Office charged him after a seventh-grader filed a complaint with the police. According to the state prosecution, in June and July 2025, in a hostel in Sofia, the teacher committed a sexual crime against a student from the same school where he teaches.
The law provides for a penalty of "imprisonment" for the crime from 2 to 8 years.
The State Agency for Child Protection recalled that the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Child Protection Act clearly define any person under 18 years of age as a child, and the Criminal Code states that persons under 14 years of age cannot give valid consent to intimate relations. Responsibility for such acts lies entirely with the adult.
