Petar Cholakov: Supporting a GERB presidential candidate would be a grave political mistake for PP-DB - 1

The autumn session of the National Assembly began with sharp remarks on the sidelines, early bets on the battle for “Dondukov“ 2 and a dispute about a trip to Beijing. In the bTV studio, political scientist Petar Cholakov and journalist Alexander Simov commented on the political tone and possible scenarios before the presidential election next year.

During the celebrations on September 6, the head of state used rhetoric against “scoundrels“ and “political brokers“.

“The tone is pre-election, but it suits the president to be critical. The president remained the only one who did not “get it together“. And PP-DB doesn't like to talk like that, for example“, said Alexander Simov.

Peter Cholakov noted that the words were not surprising and placed them in the context of the “coexistence“ between the institutions, recalling agreements regarding appointments in the “Security“ sector.

Simov also commented on a possible political project by Rumen Radev.

“After four years of not seeing a project, I don't think there will be one by the end of the mandate. Time in politics is not infinite“, he believes.

“There is low trust in the parliament and the government. And Radev maintains high trust, but let's not get carried away - the systemic crisis is deep and makes forecasts risky“, Cholakov explained.

GERB leader Boyko Borisov spoke about a common presidential candidate of the “center-right“.

Simov described this as a “provocation“ that puts PP-DB in an awkward situation for the second round.

Cholakov believes that supporting a GERB candidate would be a “serious political mistake“ for PP-DB, even if an independent candidacy seems weaker.

Both interlocutors expect MRF to nominate its own candidate or a figure “for trade in the second round“. According to Cholakov, the most likely profile is “clearly Euro-Atlantic, pro-European“.

BSP “will have its own candidate“, said Simov, recalling that names are already circulating in the left space, but there is no final decision.
