A property dispute between two families on the island of Crete led to shooting on both sides, in which two people died and 15 were injured in hospital. Special police units are at the scene of the incident, BNR reports.
Among the injured are police officers who were the first to arrive at the scene of the shooting in the village of Voritsia on Crete. There are also injured children. There are relatives from both warring families in the hospitals where the injured are being treated, and the police are guarding them.
Schools in the area around the village are closed. The head of the Greek police and special riot control units, who arrived from Athens, are on site.
The shootout lasted about an hour with an unknown number of weapons. Over a thousand rounds were fired.
Investigators reported that the cause of the incident was a dispute over the land of a newly built house of one of the families. A bomb was placed in the unbuilt building, which led to the bloody revenge.
In Athens, police units are patrolling five Roma neighborhoods for fear that the tension will spread from Crete to Athens, where both families have relatives.
Farmers on Crete, who had blocked roads with tractors in protest against the government, immediately ended the protest in memory of the dead.
