The further south, the warmer. There is no talk of winter tourism in the absence of snow. As a result of global warming, which has been within 2-3 degrees for the last 30 years, the Alps have closed a number of ski resorts in their lower parts, precisely because of the lack of snow.

Bansko has also “felt” global warming and the season is now much shorter. Artificial snow machines cannot help form a fluffy and so desired surface for skiing.

Against the backdrop of all this, it is surprising that our southern neighbor - Greece, where it is even warmer, is starting to invest heavily in the renovation of its most famous mountain and ski destinations. The ambition is similar to the one that Bulgaria has for Bansko - the transformation of resorts into year-round centers for recreation and sports, Greek media report.

The peak of the winter season is between December 20 and January 10. Data show that during this time of year, hotel occupancy reaches 75%. This year it is expected to be higher, as many reservations are made at the last minute, says Angelos Kallias, secretary general of the Greek Federation of Hotels (PHK). In some popular destinations, hotel occupancy has already reached 90% for the Christmas and New Year holidays. This is the case, for example, in Ioannina and Kalavrita. In Kapenitsa and Meteora, 95% of hotel capacity is filled. In Florina, Edessa, Kastoria and Imathia, almost 100% of the hotel capacity is filled.

The snow in the highest parts of the mountains has already accumulated and is sufficient for the start of the ski season. This is the case, for example, with the Voras ski center, which is the third highest peak in Greece.

A new six-seater lift is starting at the Anili ski center in Metsovo. It, as well as a modern lift, new snow guns, expanded parking and slopes, with a capacity to serve up to 2,500 people at a time, are part of the investments made this year.

The "Tria-Piente Piigadia" ski area on Mount Bermio also underwent serious modernization. There are already 35 new facilities for artificial snow. After the New Year, the installation of mountain trains will begin. The center is also introducing electronic tickets. By 2026, it should also include the full renovation of the hotel, which, together with the sports facility, will be able to host sports teams for summer training.
