An action by border police at the Danube Bridge near Ruse thwarted another attempt by an organized crime group to leave Bulgaria with the loot from telephone fraud, the “Border Police“ announced.
At the center of the events was a 27-year-old man from Sevlievo, known as “mule“, who was caught in a taxi with the impressive sum of 29,860 leva and five gold pieces of jewelry. According to investigators, the valuables were taken from an elderly woman, deceived by a classic scheme – she threw the money and jewelry over the balcony of her home after being misled by the phone.
The operation of the law enforcement agencies does not stop there. During the investigation, a 23-year-old accomplice was also detained, located by the team of the “Special Tactical Actions“ sector of the Ruse Regional Police Department.
In addition, an 18-year-old woman was arrested after 3,370 leva were found on her, carefully hidden in her underwear. Just a few days earlier, on June 21, the same team of border police officers thwarted another attempt to illegally export money acquired through fraud. Then a 23-year-old man from Pleven was stopped at the border with 2,100 leva and 2,950 dollars, obtained in an identical criminal way in the territory of the Pleven region. Since the beginning of May 2025 To date, officers of the Ruse Police Department have prevented the transfer of over 100,000 leva, taken from elderly people through telephone fraud, in a total of five separate cases.
The police emphasize that the vigilance of border guards and their quick reaction are key to intercepting such criminal schemes. The Border Police appeal to citizens to be especially careful when receiving suspicious calls and not to provide money or valuables to strangers.
