Comment by Bulgarian historian Alexander Stoyanov on Facebook:
One of the reasons why Orban clearly lost Hungary, and why Radev has clear prospects for victory in Bulgaria, is that there was a revolution in Hungary in 1956, but not in Bulgaria.
Bulgaria is the only country that has not removed its communist party from power since 1989. Bulgaria is the only country where the USSR did not sends occupation troops because there is no need. Bulgaria is the only one, besides the USSR, that liquidated its entire private sector. Bulgaria is the only one in which all modern political forces appear to be direct heirs of the Communist Party.
Even after 16 years of authoritarian rule and trampling on freedoms, the Hungarians found the strength to fight back.
We have been wearing the red yoke for 37 years now and an entire nation is pulling a cart with a few hundred pumpkins and shopaholics who have become rich with power and money.
What is happening tonight (April 12) in Budapest must finally happen in Sofia, because otherwise we are doomed as a nation without a future, forever stuck in our totalitarian past.
On the 19th, we must all be at the polls. 70 years after the Hungarians, it is time for our people to rise up against communism.
