And yet the reality is this: 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks shot and wounded spectacularly, but safely for his life, the most hated and most loved businessman and politician in the most powerful country in the world. It almost made him a co-destined fellow of historical giants like Lincoln or Kennedy. Almost. So "almost" that there will be people who will read it almost "on purpose".

It's not in anyone's power to guarantee that they can just shoot someone in the corner of the ear and be sure it won't kill them. There is no such movie. So this is attempted murder. But his failure has the opposite effect. No doubt.

The breathless reports after the attack that Trump is fine don't tell the whole truth. He is not just well, but in excellent political health, and we can have no doubt that he will make the most of it for his campaign purposes. Another may wonder whether it was right to encourage free access to firearms until now, but we cannot expect such remorse from Trump. He is an undisputed target of an assassination attempt, narrowly escaped death, and that will make him step up, not make excuses.
