Italy coach Gennaro Gattuso spoke before the decisive match against Israel in Udine.
„We are happy that the war is over and people can return home – it's wonderful. There will be about 10-11 thousand fans in the stadium – some will support us, others will criticize us, and we respect them all. Football should unite“, said Gattuso.
He thanked Luciano Spalletti for his words that he had brought “lightness“ back to the team:
„Thank you. I believe that there is only one thing for sure – death. Everything else you have to earn. When I took over the team, I knew exactly what I wanted. The players have a lot of merit - look at Bastoni and Keane, they stayed with the team, they showed their commitment.“
Gattuso also revealed one of his tactical doubts:
„I hesitated whether we could play with two strikers, but I'm happy - not only because of the goals, but because of their work. The young Pio Esposito has incredible performance and deserves recognition.“
Yet the coach remained realistic:
„Play-offs? Relax. We haven't won them yet.“
Italy is second in Group “I” with 12 points, but a game less than Norway, who have 18 points. Gennaro Gattuso's men will almost certainly finish second, which would give them a play-off spot for the World Cup. Israel also has a chance if they win in Udine today.
Gattuso: Let's beat Israel, then we'll think about the playoffs
The Italians are on a four-game winning streak
