1.3 million spectator tickets sold for Milan-Cortina - 1

Some 1.3 million spectator tickets for the Milan-Cortina Olympic Games have been sold, representing 88% of all available passes, said Organizing Committee President Andrea Varnier, quoted by AFP, BTA reported.

"We have reached 1.3 million tickets sold, which is a higher number than we had hoped and predicted", he said during a press conference.

"Italian spectators account for 37% and foreigners for 63%, with Germany in first place, with a share of 15%, followed by the United States (14%), Great Britain, Switzerland, the Netherlands, France and Canada", he added Vernier.

As for the different sports, only one of them was completely sold out and "absolutely incredible, it's ski mountaineering, which made its debut in Bormio", said the president.

"Ski mountaineering made a phenomenal debut in an incredible atmosphere. It should be remembered that there were also few sessions - three competitions spread over two days. So it was easier to sell tickets", explained the Italian.

Among the most popular sports are speed skating, which is very popular in the Netherlands (95% of tickets sold), short track speed skating (95%), figure skating and ice hockey (93% of tickets sold each).
