The leader in the Formula 1 general classification Andrea Kimi Antonelli sent a categorical message to his Mercedes teammate George Russell ahead of the upcoming start of the 2026 season in Miami, reports sportal.bg.
In the first three races of the year, the two drivers exchanged victories - Russell triumphed in Australia, and Antonelli responded with victories in China and Japan. Thus, the 19-year-old Italian became the youngest leader in the history of Formula 1, but he himself admits that the enormous attention around him also carries the risk of distraction. Antonelli stressed that although he is confident in his pace, his biggest challenge remains the experience, in which Russell has a serious advantage.
„It's easy to lose concentration when everyone puts you in the spotlight. Expectations have changed very quickly. Experience is George's strongest weapon and this cannot be easily compensated. But I believe that if the opportunity arises, I will be ready to fight for the title. My first victory showed me that I can beat anyone when everything is in order“, Antonelli told BILD.
The young driver added that the key to success is in the details and perseverance: “I have to master the basics perfectly. This is something that we constantly repeat with the team.“
The rivalry in the Mercedes garage is already emerging as one of the intrigues of the season, and the battle between the young talent and the more experienced Russell is only going to get worse.
