The American company Amprius Technologies has unveiled a new battery for electric vehicles that is equipped with a silicon anode and can reach a 90 percent charge level in 15 minutes.
The new sample A battery packs have a high specific energy of 360 Wh/kg and a power density of 1200 W/kg. They can operate in temperatures from -30°C to 55°C and provide a much longer range than current EV batteries.
These batteries can reportedly reach 80 percent charge in less than six minutes and 90 percent charge in 15 minutes. The company is also working to achieve 1,000 cycles for its batteries, which helps extend their life.
According to the manufacturer, the Amprius A battery uses lithium-ion cells, but with a small feature. Instead of graphite on the anode, the company uses silicon, which provides 10 times more energy and a much better life cycle.
The company notes that the anode does not contain a solid rod, but silicon placed in a nanowire template with sufficient spacing between them. This promotes volume expansion and easier and more direct pathways for electrons and ions to move, leading to higher charging rates.
„We look forward to USABC's confirmation of the A-sample cell performance to demonstrate the unique advantages of Amprius cells in electric vehicles,” Dr. Kang Sun, CEO of Amprius, said in a media release Technologies.
