Fear in Tehran! Iran Calls for Ban on Attacks on Nuclear Sites - 1

Iran has submitted a draft resolution to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) calling for a worldwide ban on military attacks on nuclear facilities, the head of Iran's Atomic Energy Agency, Mohammad Eslami, said.

Speaking before the IAEA's 69th General Conference in Vienna, Eslami condemned the recent "Israeli" and US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites as violations of international law and examples of "double standards" by the agency.

The Israeli attack on June 13 and the subsequent US bombings of Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan killed hundreds, including senior commanders and scientists, prompting the Iranian parliament to suspend all cooperation with the IAEA.

Eslami said the significance of the resolution was to officially register opposition to such attacks, even if it was not adopted.

"Its rejection would in itself reveal a fundamental violation of the UN Charter," he said, adding that several countries allied with Iran supported the initiative. Among them were China, Russia, Belarus, Venezuela and Nicaragua.

Iran says attacks on nuclear sites "pose a serious risk" on the IAEA safeguards system, international peace and security, and the safety of facilities, personnel, and nuclear materials. The Islamic Republic emphasizes the "inalienable right to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes" and insists that countries are entitled to "effective guarantees against any attack or threat of attack" by the IAEA.
