A crew member of a Dutch cargo ship that was attacked by Yemeni Houthi rebels in the Gulf of Aden last week has died of his wounds, Netherlands-based company "Splithof" said today, quoted by Reuters, BTA reported.

The company did not release additional details about the deceased crew member, but its spokesman told Dutch media that the deceased had Filipino citizenship.

Another crew member remains under medical observation in Djibouti, with the company "Splithof" saying his condition is stable and he is expected to return home later this week.

The vessel "Minervagracht" was in international waters in the Gulf of Aden when it was hit by an explosive device, causing significant damage and a fire on the ship. A helicopter was used to rescue the crew, which evacuated its 19 members, who have Russian, Ukrainian, Filipino and Sri Lankan citizenship.

The Yemeni Houthi group claimed responsibility for the attack. Since 2023, the Iran-aligned group has carried out a series of attacks on ships in the Red Sea, targeting vessels it says are linked to Israel. The Houthis say they are acting in solidarity with the Palestinians over Israel's war in the Gaza Strip, Reuters recalls.
