Germany Recalls Ambassador from Georgia - 1

Germany is temporarily recalling its ambassador to Georgia for consultations, the Foreign Ministry in Berlin announced, quoted by DPA, BTA reported.

In a publication in Exx, the ministry stated that the Georgian leadership has taken hostile actions against the European Union and personally against German Ambassador Peter Fischer.

The ministry added that for this reason it has made the decision to recall Fischer from Tbilisi until it considers how to proceed further. According to the diplomatic service, Georgia will be the topic of the meeting of EU foreign ministers tomorrow.

About two weeks ago, the Ministry made an official demarche to the Georgian chargé d'affaires in Berlin against the treatment of Fischer.

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze accused the diplomat of interfering in his country's internal affairs, and the reason was Fischer's repeated criticism of the authoritarian course of the government in Tbilisi, DPA notes.

At the end of September, Fischer incurred reproaches from the Georgian leadership after he went to a court hearing against opposition figures and was therefore summoned to give explanations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tbilisi.

The ruling party "Georgian Dream" declared itself the winner of the 2024 elections amid allegations of election fraud. Kobakhidze then suspended an article in the constitution that explicitly stated that Georgia aspired to European integration.

Weeks of protests followed, mainly in the capital, but also in other cities.
