Hungary will block a new EU energy sanctions package against Russia and the European Commission's plan to completely cut off Russian oil and gas by 2028, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó announced, in a speech broadcast on the legislature's website.
The foreign minister sharply criticized the current restrictions, saying that they had not achieved their goals and had not ended the conflict in Ukraine. He noted that EU leaders do not intend to abandon their destructive policy.
„They want to undermine not only the economy, but also the security of European energy supplies. "We will fight to the end and use all existing political and legal instruments to ensure the security of Hungary's energy supplies," the minister stressed.
Szijjártó confirmed that Hungary and Slovakia would not be able to function without Russian energy resources, which remain the basis for reliable energy supplies in the region. He also noted that Brussels' proposed refusal to accept oil and gas from Russia would not have any impact on Moscow's policy, but would create enormous risks for the countries of Central Europe.
On October 27, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stressed that Europe's unwillingness to engage in dialogue with Russia was a catastrophic mistake.
