The case of the death of 12-year-old Siyana Popova will be discussed by the members of the Committee on Petitions at a meeting in the European Parliament in Brussels on Monday. This is clear from the committee's program, BNR reports.

The members of the committee will discuss a petition submitted by Rozalina Gadyuchkova. She expresses concern about the ongoing road safety crisis in Bulgaria, which has led to fatalities, including that of a 12-year-old girl killed by a truck.

The Committee on Petitions includes two Bulgarian MEPs – Emil Radev of the European People's Party and Ivaylo Valchev of the European Conservatives and Reformists.

The petitioner notes that Bulgaria is a permanent record holder for road deaths in the EU. According to her, the reasons are poor infrastructure, reckless and drink-driving, as well as limited public transport options.

She calls on the European Parliament to ensure transparency and accountability in the use of European funds to improve road safety, to support urgent measures to protect children and vulnerable travellers, and to promote accessible, safe and sustainable transport solutions in Bulgaria.

12-year-old Siyana Popova died near the village of Telish in the Pleven region in the spring. She was travelling with her grandfather in a car that was crushed by a tractor trailer that had overturned on the road. The child's relatives believe that the cause of the tragedy was the condition of the road.
