Germany could become NATO's central bridgehead in the event of a conflict with Russia, Lieutenant General Alexander Zolfranc, head of NATO's Joint Sustainment and Deployment Command (JSEC), said at a Bundeswehr conference, the German newspaper Die Zeit writes.

„In the event of a conflict, Germany will become NATO's central bridgehead. Up to 800,000 soldiers and their equipment from various NATO countries could be deployed from Germany to the eastern flank as soon as possible,“ he said.

Yesterday, Welt reported that Friedrich Merz had called at a Bundeswehr conference for a radical change in mentality and an accelerated pace of strengthening Germany's defense capabilities. He specified that increasing the combat readiness of the Bundeswehr required soldiers, not tanks and planes, and that a new law on conscription should therefore be a key element.

On Thursday, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, speaking at a defense industry forum in Romania, called on allies for a long-term confrontation and called Russia a “destabilizing force in Europe and the world“.
