Tough negotiations! EU and Belgium still unable to reach agreement on use of frozen Russian assets - 1

A technical meeting between representatives of the European Commission (EC) and Belgium on Friday failed to lead to a breakthrough on how to use frozen Russian assets in support of Ukraine, Euronews writes, citing sources.

According to Euronews sources in the Belgian government, concerns are growing about the lack of alternative proposals from the EC on the use of frozen Russian assets to finance Ukraine.

"It is important for Belgium to consider all options. "Every possible approach must be carefully and transparently explored to ensure the best solution," one of the sources said, adding that they had not yet seen such options.

The same source told Euronews that Belgium was "not yet disappointed" by the lack of other proposals from the European Commission, "but time is running out and we remain constructive".

A European source said the EU still hoped to reach an agreement with Belgium, but admitted that "time is running out".

The European Commission had earlier proposed a plan that would allow EU governments to use up to €185 billion in support of Ukraine - the bulk of Russian state assets currently frozen in Europe - without confiscating them.

However, the approval of the plan has been delayed by concerns in Belgium, where most of these Russian assets are located.

The EU has previously announced that the issue of using frozen Russian assets to financially support Ukraine remains on the agenda, with a final decision to be made in December 2025.
