US President Donald Trump has pardoned a number of his political allies for their support or participation in alleged plans to overturn the 2020 presidential election, the Justice Department's pardon attorney, Ed Martin, announced, as quoted by CNN.

Among those pardoned are former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Sidney Powell and former Chief of Staff Mark Meadows.

"This proclamation ends a grave national injustice committed against the American people since the 2020 presidential election and continues the process of national reconciliation," the Justice Department noted.

Presidential pardons apply only to federal charges, not state or local ones.

A week earlier, the president pardoned a retired New York City police officer convicted in 2023 of persecuting a New Jersey family on behalf of the Chinese government. Trump also pardoned former Major League Baseball star Daryl Strawberry for a 1995 tax evasion charge.
