A tragic shipwreck occurred 26 nautical miles south of Ierapetra. According to the coast guard, 18 people were found dead and two passengers were found alive and rescued.

Contrary to initial information, the boat did not capsize. The 18 dead were found inside the boat and according to initial assessments, they appear to have died of hypothermia and starvation, as they had been left exposed to bad weather for a long time.
The two survivors told authorities that the boat was uncontrollable due to the bad weather and that they struggled for hours without food or protection from the conditions. Information from the Coast Guard indicates that the bodies of the 18 people on board had been dead for more than a day.
