Copenhagen sees possible threat from Washington, doubts US role as guarantor of European security - 1

Danish Military Intelligence has questioned the role of the US in ensuring European security and identified a possible threat from Washington, the service's annual report shows.

“The United States uses economic power, in the form of threats of high tariffs, to impose its will and no longer excludes the use of military force even against allies. There is uncertainty about the role of the United States as a guarantor of European security“, the report says.

The agency also notes growing competition in the Arctic, especially due to Washington's interest in Greenland. “Such attention increases the threat of espionage and attempts to further influence all parts of the Kingdom of Denmark“, the country's intelligence agency notes.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that Greenland should join the United States. He has threatened to impose high trade tariffs on Denmark if it does not give up the island. During his first term as president, Trump proposed buying Greenland. The Danish and Greenlandic authorities rejected the idea. However, a January survey found that only 6% of the population supported joining the United States.

Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark. In 1951, Washington and Copenhagen, in addition to their obligations to NATO, signed the Greenland Defense Treaty. According to it, the United States pledged to defend the island from aggression. The American space base Pitufik is located there, which serves as a missile attack warning system and monitors the Arctic zone.
