The Palestinian Health Ministry said Israeli forces killed a Palestinian in the southern occupied West Bank on Monday. The Israeli army said it had foiled an attempted stabbing attack, AFP reported.

The ministry identified the man as 23-year-old Mohammed Wael al-Sharrouf, "shot by (Israeli) forces in the north" from the city of Hebron.

The Israeli army, for its part, announced that its soldiers had "eliminated a terrorist who tried to stab them in the Hebron area".

The Palestinian Authority for Civil Affairs said yesterday that Israeli forces had killed a 16-year-old teenager in Jenin, in the northern West Bank.

The Israeli army, for its part, said that soldiers had killed a man who "threw an explosive device at the soldiers", who "returned fire and eliminated the terrorist".

Violence in the West Bank has escalated since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip, triggered by an unprecedented attack by the Palestinian Islamist movement "Hamas" against Israel on October 7, 2023. It has not stopped despite the ceasefire in Gaza, which came into effect on October 10.

According to official Israeli figures, at least 44 Israelis, civilians and soldiers, have been killed in Palestinian attacks or in Israeli military actions.

At the same time, more than a thousand Palestinians, fighters and civilians, have been killed by Israeli soldiers or settlers, according to AFP estimates based on Palestinian Authority data.
