A man threw smoke bombs at a Taipei subway station next to the city's main railway station today and stabbed several people, killing three and injuring nine, many of them critically, DPA reported, quoted by dariknews.bg, citing Taiwan's Central News Agency.

The suspect is a 27-year-old man named Chang Wen, who also died, the agency said.

Local media reported that the man, who was a wanted fugitive, was surrounded by police on the roof of a building and fell, leading to his death.

Police said the suspect first set off a smoke bomb near the station exit, causing panic, then moved to the nearby shopping area of "Zhonghan Mas" station Rapid Transit" (Zhongshan Mass Rapid Transit), where he randomly stabbed passersby.

Premier Cho Chung-tae said authorities had immediately ordered heightened security measures nationwide at railway and bus stations, subway stations and airports. Cho also asked authorities to work through the night to uncover the suspect's motive.

President William Lai said the government would step up security, investigate the case quickly and ensure public safety.
