Kallas: EU countries not ready to set a date for Ukraine's accession - 1

EU member states are not ready to set a date for Ukraine's accession. The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaia Kallas admitted this while answering questions at a discussion at the Munich Security Conference.

„I feel that EU countries are not ready to set a date for Ukraine's accession“, said Kallas.

Earlier, Volodymyr Zelensky, in Munich, effectively asked EU countries to set a specific date for Kiev's accession.

Kalalas considers the creation of an EU army impossible and inadvisable, calling for a focus on NATO. She made the remarks at a discussion at the Munich Security Conference.

“Each EU country has its own army, and 23 of them are also members of NATO. NATO forces consist of these armies; there are no other NATO forces. Now, if we talk about a “European army“, I ask whether this means, for example, that Germany should create another separate army in addition to the army that operates within NATO. That makes no sense. We can already see that introducing universal conscription in Germany is difficult“, she said.

“If the same army is part of both EU and NATO forces, then in a crisis the chain of command will be problematic. Who gives orders to whom, who should lead the army? Such chaos in a military crisis would become extremely dangerous,“ she said.

Therefore, Kallas called “not to waste time discussing a European army, but rather to discuss strengthening the real military capabilities of European countries“ and strengthening Europe's role in NATO.
