Rosatom may build Vietnam's first nuclear power plant - 1

Russia and Vietnam may sign an agreement this year on the construction of the Ninh Thuan-1 nuclear power plant, Russian Ambassador to Hanoi Gennady Bezdetko announced, quoted by the Vietnam News Agency (VNA), BTA reported.

In December 2024, Vietnam's National Assembly decided to restart the project to build the country's first nuclear power plant, which was suspended in 2016 due to high costs. The initial partner in the project was the state corporation Rosatom.

The Ninh Thuan-1 nuclear power plant was planned to be built using a preferential target loan from Russia. The nuclear power plant was planned to consist of two blocks with VVER-type reactors with a capacity of up to 1.2 gigawatts each.

In May last year, Russia and Vietnam adopted a roadmap for cooperation in the field of peaceful atomic energy until 2030. The plan includes the development of nuclear energy in Vietnam with the participation of “Rosatom“, the construction of new nuclear reactors, the creation of centers for nuclear science and medicine, as well as the training of local specialists.
