Senior Trump administration official resigns, says Iran is not a threat, Israel dragged us into war - 1

The director of the US Counterterrorism Center, Joseph Kent, resigned today, becoming the first and most senior member of President Donald Trump's administration to resign over the war with Iran, Reuters reported, BTA reported.

Kent said Tehran does not pose an immediate threat to the United States.

"Iran poses no immediate threat to the United States.

"I cannot in good conscience support the ongoing war in Iran. "Iran does not pose an immediate threat to our country, and it is clear that we started this war because of pressure from Israel and its influential lobby," Kent wrote in a letter to US President Donald Trump, published on the social network "Ex".

Some experts say that under current US law, there must be an imminent threat to the United States to start a war, Reuters notes.

The White House has not yet responded to Reuters' request for comment on Kent's resignation.

Before joining the Trump administration, Kent ran two unsuccessful campaigns for Congress, the AP notes. He served in the US armed forces and then worked for the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
