Netherlands to provide three more F-16s for training Ukrainian pilots in Romania - 1

The Netherlands will deliver three more F-16 fighters to a training base in Romania, where Ukrainian pilots and ground teams will receive flight training and maintain the aircraft in combat readiness, Reuters and News.bg reported.

Amsterdam is one of the driving forces behind the international coalition to deliver F-16s to Ukraine to strengthen its air defenses against a Russian invasion.

Denmark, the Netherlands and the United States expect to deliver the first of dozens of F-16 fighters to Ukraine this summer, after establishing a pilot training program and donating the aircraft.

Last year, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called the agreement a "breakthrough" and said the planes would bolster Ukraine's air defenses and help counterattack Russian forces.

However, U.S. officials have noted that the planes will not be a game-changer when they are eventually delivered to Kiev after months of training, given the strength of the Russian air force and its defense systems.

In March, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the F-16s would not change the situation on the battlefield and would be shot down by Russian forces.

Since November, the Netherlands has already sent eight of a promised total of 18 F-16 fighters to the training base.

It has also pledged to deliver a total of 24 F-16s for use in Ukraine, with the first expected to arrive in the second half of the year, in addition to earlier deliveries of aircraft from the Danish armed forces.

Last week Amsterdam announced that it would increase military support for Ukraine to a total of 3 billion euros this year and has set aside the same amount for 2025.
